She’s the daughter of an earl with a secret no one can know. He’s a mage who has sacrificed everything to save those he loves. They were born worlds apart, but inside a city drenched in magic, anything is possible. Unmarried at the age of six-and-twenty, Lady Elizabeth “Bits” Warner has become a burden to her family. Therefore, she isn’t surprised when they pack her on a train bound for Scotland and a fiancé she has never met. She’s not surprised, but she is terrified. In Corrigan, a walled-off city that serves as refuge to those capable of using the aether to cast spells and concoct potions, Ezra Nash is devoted to healing the sick and injured. Between his work as a surgeon and caring for his sisters, he doesn’t have time for distractions. When the train Bits is traveling on explodes, she finds herself inside the gates of Corrigan and under Ezra’s care. The two are drawn to one another, but it will take more than attraction to overcome the difference in their stations and the secrets they hide from the world.
I loved this book. When I first finished it, I immediately reread it again and again until "A Desire Like Song" released a few months later. Bits is absolutely darling, and I loved how she wasn't of the "perfect" body type you see in a bunch of books. I empathized with Bits' social troubles, noticing a lot of her issues were ones I once shared. I noticed another review saying that simply mentioning cogs and gears and a few airships does not make the novel steampunk- but I disagree; for characters who have lived in a world like that all their lives, they won't be pointing out everything that is steampunk. In other steampunk novels, I feel overwhelmed when they give boatloads of information about their world and its steampunk ways. I liked how Ms. Blackwell gave us more information gradually, letting it sink in before giving us a bit more.Ms. Blackwell's writing voice is heartwarming and hilarious. I loved the way she narrated using her characters' narrations. I strive to write like her someday. And the storyline - enchanting. I never thought mixing steampunk and magic would intertwine so smoothly and naturally.Ms. Blackwell also has a variety of people and cast within her stories, which I appreciate! I have grown tired of a monotone cast of characters, with the same old problems. If I were to say who was my favorite character in this book, Henrick is my number one. I adore him! I like to highlight my favorite parts in a book, and all the lines Henry says are highlighted. All the powers/magic in this book were intriguing. I loved it when we learned a bit more about all the possibilities the aether and etc. could provide!! One con was that I felt like the ending for the main romance rushed a bit at the end. It was cute, but it I think it could be better.
