At long last and after more than fifteen years, I, among others, have been waiting for this soundtrack to one of Burt Reynolds greatest movies (since "Gator" and "White Lightning") to arrive, and finally, it has. Originally released on Warner Brothers Records in 1981, it showcases the talents of great Jazz legends (mind you, I said the word, and I emphasize it one more time, talent) some late some still living. Former me, done by mber of The Crusaders, Randy Crawford starts off with "Street Life" (which would again be featured in Quentin Tarantino's film "Jackie Brown"). "Dope Bust" is by Flora Purim and Buddy DeFranco (the drug bust goes south in the movie). "Route 66", written by Bobby Troup (married to Julie London, both starred in the 70's TV show "Emergency!"- Recommended. He also co-writes three more songs on this album) is done by the legendary Manhattan Transfer (outstanding). There are two versions of "My Funny Valentine" interpreted by both Chet Baker (died in 1987 from complications involving drug and alcohol abuse) and Julie London (her final recording here). Legendary "Tonight Show" talent Doc Severinsen does "High Energy" and "Sexercise". Sarah Vaughan puts in her stellar best on "Love Theme From Sharky's Machine" (I love this song, also co-written by Bobby Troup). Joe Williams plays the odds on "8 to 5 I Lose". As I stated before, Julie London's version of "My Funny Valentine" is done in her always inimitable jazz fashion (she also recorded about 7 or 8 albums for Liberty Records). Peggy Lee does "Let's Keep Dancing" (she also lent her voice to the Disney cartoon "Lady And The Tramp"). Eddie Harris ("Compared To What?!" with Les McCann, Atlantic) interprets "Sharky's Theme". Sarah Vaughan and Joe Williams end this album with "Before You" (End Theme to the movie). For those or all of us who STILL believe in real music, this album is second to none (Maybe this is the wrong statement to make, I should come up with something better). Like the movie, this soundtrack is memorable and worth the listen. Also try the movie. Both will not disappoint. (Varese Sarabande/Viva Records)
